USAGE AREA

Glass Industry

Glass industry quartz is the high-purity silicon dioxide (SiO₂) source that serves as the main raw material for glass in the production of flat glass, container glass, fibreglass and glassware. The clarity, colour and quality of the glass depend largely on the SiO₂ purity and iron content of the quartz used. High-purity quartz with a typical SiO₂ content of 99.8% delivers consistent quality and low impurity levels in glass production.

How to Choose Glass Quartz?

The criteria that determine quartz for glass production are clear. SiO₂ purity is the most important property; because glass is composed predominantly of silicon dioxide, a high SiO₂ content defines the basic structure and quality of the glass. Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) content directly affects the colour of the glass; while a low iron content is sufficient for container glass, flat glass and fibreglass, in extra-clear (flint) and optical glass the iron level is assessed separately according to the project. Controlled grain size ensures that the quartz melts evenly and homogeneously in the furnace. A stable chemical composition, in turn, delivers the same glass quality from batch to batch.

Recommended Product for Glass Production

Granular quartz with a controlled gradation is used in glass production. We can determine the right product together according to your glass type (container, flat glass, fibreglass, etc.) and your iron requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Glass Industry

Why is high-purity quartz used in glass production?

Glass is composed predominantly of silicon dioxide; for this reason, a high SiO₂ purity determines the structure, quality and clarity of the glass.

How does the iron content in quartz affect glass?

Iron oxide affects the colour of the glass. A low iron content gives clearer glass; in extra-clear and optical glass the iron limit is stricter.

Does every type of glass require the same quartz?

No. While a low iron content is sufficient for container and flat glass, flint and optical glass require lower iron; the requirement is assessed according to the glass type.

What grain size does glass quartz have?

Granular quartz with a controlled gradation suitable for the furnace and process is used.
