What is Silica Sand?

Silica sand is the base raw material for making moulds and cores in the casting of iron, steel and non-ferrous metals. Because it must withstand the high temperature of molten metal, it requires high refractoriness, dimensional stability and a controlled grain distribution. For this reason, foundries use high-SiO₂, low-clay silica sand — typically fractions in the 50–70 AFS range.

Silica sand (also known as quartz sand) is a natural mineral sand composed mainly of SiO₂ crystals. Our products have a typical SiO₂ content of 96.3% and an Fe₂O₃ content of 0.18%, which means high chemical stability and low impurity. The raw material is put through multi-stage washing, drying and screening to reach the required grain-size distribution and near-zero moisture. With a Mohs hardness of 7 and a density of 2.65 g/cm³, it delivers long service life in high-abrasion applications. It is supplied dry or moist, in bulk, big-bag or 25 kg bags as required.

Applications

Where is it used?

Foundry

Used as core and moulding sand in the foundry industry; the 50–70 AFS fractions are preferred where high refractoriness and thermal stability are required.

Construction & Building Chemicals

Used as building-chemicals sand in tile adhesives, joint grouts, façade profile production and precast/GRC applications, providing homogeneous colour and high grain hardness.

Glass Industry

In glass production, high SiO₂ content and low iron are critical for obtaining clear, high-quality glass.

Water Treatment / Filtration

In drinking-water and pool treatment beds, controlled-gradation silica filter sand traps suspended solids for effective filtration.

Sandblasting / Abrasive

In shipyard and metal surface preparation, dust-free 0.5–2 mm fractions serve as sandblasting sand with high abrasive power.

Sports Fields

Washed, dust-free and safe natural quartz sand is used for artificial turf, manège, beach volleyball and children's play areas.

Epoxy & Decorative Flooring

Fully controlled fractions provide high mechanical strength and slip resistance in industrial epoxy floor coatings.

Precast

Graded silica sand is used in precast and ready-mix concrete elements for surface quality, homogeneous colour and strength.

Manège

For equestrian manège floors, its elastic, well-draining and dust-free structure provides a comfortable surface for horse and rider.

Play Pit Sand

Washed, rounded, dust-free and hygienic silica sand is offered for children's play pits and sandboxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Silica Sand

What micron size does silica sand come in?

Our range runs from 63 µm fine (micronised, 90–110 AFS) up to 5 mm coarse (3–5 mm fraction). We determine the right micron range together according to your application.

What is the AFS value and which fraction should I choose?

The AFS (American Foundry Society) number expresses the fineness of the sand; the higher the number, the finer the grain. Typically 50–70 AFS is preferred for foundry, 0.5–2 mm for sandblasting and 20–70 AFS for building chemicals.

What is the SiO₂ content of silica sand?

The typical SiO₂ content of our silica sand products is 96.3%. All chemical values are typical; a real batch analysis certificate is supplied with every shipment.

What determines the price of silica sand?

Price varies with the fraction, packaging (bulk, big-bag, 25 kg bag), quantity and delivery location. Send us your requirement and we will get back to you quickly with a quote.
