How to Choose Filter Sand?
There are a few key parameters that determine the right filter sand. The effective grain size (d₁₀) and the uniformity coefficient govern the hydraulic behaviour of the filter bed and the size of the particles it retains; a narrow grain size distribution ensures orderly backwash and stable filtration. A properly washed medium with a low fines content is important so that it does not add turbidity to the water. A high SiO₂ content and chemical stability keep the sand from altering the water chemistry and support a long service life. For drinking water applications, the material is expected to meet the requirements of the TS EN 12904 standard.
